In 2021, Clean Up The Lake (CUTL) completed a nearshore (0 – 25 feet) lakebed litter cleanup along all 44 miles of California’s Lake Tahoe shoreline. This effort removed 8,219 pieces of litter totaling 10,800.3 pounds. These findings point to a pervasive litter problem in Lake Tahoe that is concentrated in litter accumulation zones. In 2022 our team will revisit 10 of these litter hotspot areas to further remediate the area and compare data from litter found to data collected in 2021. We will also be conducting an inaugural deep-water investigation of litter accumulation patterns between 70 and 35 feet depth, offshore from nearshore litter hotspots.
